The
first mention of symbolic writing is the so-called "mark of Cain", some
sign that had a meaning of "do not kill this man or worse will befall
you".
WEB Gen 4:15 Yahweh said to him, “Therefore whoever slays Cain, vengeance will be taken on him sevenfold.” Yahweh appointed a sign for Cain, so that anyone finding him would not strike him.
The
first mention of a book is the book of Adam's family history, to which
Moses apparently had access as source material for his compilation of
the genesis of all things:
WEB Gen 5:1 This is the book of the generations of Adam. In the day that God created man, he made him in God’s likeness.
