If you are praising God with your spirit, how can one who finds himself among those who do not understand say "Amen" to your thanksgiving, since he does not know what you are saying? You may be giving thanks well enough, but the other man is not edified.1 Corinthians 14:16-17
So one of the purposes of public prayer is to edify those hearing you.
Interesting.

In John 11:41-42 is this:
So they removed the stone. Then Jesus raised His eyes and said, “Father, I thank You that You heard Me. 42 I know that You always hear Me, but because of the crowd standing here I said this, so they may believe You sent Me.”
So again, one of the purposes of prayer is for the benefit of those hearing you.
